A Whisky and a Wry Smile
Went to see Frank Turner at the Borderline last night - I’ve been properly mainlining his ‘Sleep Is For The Week’ album for the last 4 weeks or so and it’s quickly become my new favourite record. I’ve been really looking forward to seeing him live and I was like a little kid last night, with a stupid grin all over my idiot face. There’s something about the guy’s songs which really strike a chord with me - the sense of guilt and frustration that comes from once having been a fairly idealistic punker kid, before growing up and realising that nothing you can do is really ever going to make a difference; in the words of ‘Once We Were Anarchists’, “young enough to be all pissed off, but young enough to be jaded”.
The Borderline was really the perfect venue to see him - small enough so that the quieter, more intimate songs carried, but big and busy enough for the big singalong choruses to really reverberate round the room. An amazing gig by someone who I really hope I’ll be going to see again soon
