Whilst recently getting all my old, boxed-up CDs into iTunes, I rediscovered ‘Developer’ by Silkworm, which was one of my favourite slow-burn rock records of the late 90s. It’s the only one of their albums I own, but apparently they were releasing records up until 2005, when drummer Mike Dahlquist was killed in a road collision. While searching round on my internets for more information about their other albums, I discovered an article on the Matador website by bassist Tim Midgett.
During the Baggage years, I sat down a number of times to write an article statiting that the age-old cop-out to arguments about music – “It’s all a matter of opinion” – was wrong, and that there are certain objective truths about music that can’t be dismissed as “each to their own”. I could never formulate the argument coherently enough to be happy with it, but Midgett’s ‘Musical Correctness’ article lays it all down, mathematical proof and all.
